Job Description Scientific Software Engineer Client is seeking a scientific software engineer to partner with research scientists, computational scientists and the IT team. This highly skilled software engineer will focus on developing software systems to support research science. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working in an agile software development environment in which daily communication, interaction, and sharing of ideas with peers and clients are essential for success. The successful incumbent will thrive in a rapidly changing technology landscape in which it is required to learn new technologies to solve current scientific problems on the job without formal training. The incumbent will have working familiarity with a majority of the following technologies: Java, JSF, HTML 5, JavaScript, XML/JSON, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and associated frameworks and libraries such as Java RichFaces, and D3. Experience interacting with APIs to various biological tools such as Biomart, Intermine, and Galaxy would be considered a plus. Prior experience in web and user interface development as well as database development and management is required. This position requires a high level of interest in science, genomics, and a desire to partner closely with scientists across JAX. Responsibilities Requirements analysis with dedication to meeting with scientists to document and prioritize their software/system needs. Programming, with a focus on writing program code. Database design and management, with a focus on developing a data management and storage platform. Exploration for future advances in informatics with a dedication to exploring data management/data storage/software development solutions for future expansion in data, such as cloud computing solutions, novel smart phone apps. Required Experience Possess a PhD in a computational field (CS, CSE, EE) with experience in bioinformatics research. Possess excellent communication skills and proven track record of collaborating with a diverse group of scientists. Background in genetics, genomics, and biology and/or eagerness to learn the sciences. Working familiarity with a majority of the following technologies: Java, JSF, HTML 5, JavaScript, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and associated frameworks and libraries such as Java RichFaces, and /D3. Experience working in the area of user interface and database design and development. Be comfortable in a high-pace environment and able to respond to urgent needs. Possess the ability to produce well-designed software systems including architecture and user interface.
