Job Description:
Role: Senior Materials Engineer
Location:Richland, WA
- The Position Holder WillApply principles of engineering, physics, and materials science as well as an understanding of core areas including mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, structural analysis, metallurgy, and electrical properties to design and analyze high performance materials and processing approaches relevant to many applications, including the transportation and nuclear sectors.
- Research, plan, design, and develop mechanical and other specialty testing and material processing systems.
Collaborate with highly diverse research staff in the following technical areas:
- Development and characterization of high strength lightweight materials for vehicles,Development, characterization and processing of high strength materials for operation in extreme conditions,Characterization and modeling of the microstructure and behavior of materials under various operating and environmental conditions ,Advanced forming, joining and manufacturing processes for metals,Topics in mechanical metallurgy and applied mechanics, including design of experiments and application for materials development.
- Propose, develop and execute original ideas to solve science and engineering problems, serving as principal investigator or co-PI on multiple or significantly complex, and/or high risk projects or tasks and/or involving multiple tasks, capabilities, and organizations.
Minimum Qualifications
- BS/BA with 7 years of experience, or MS/MA with 5 years of experience, or PhD with 3 years of experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD in mechanical engineering, materials science, metallurgy or related field with 3 or more years of industrial or research laboratory experience
- Experience as principal investigator on multiple or significantly complex and/or high-risk projects or tasks
- Experience in designing and executing experimental projects in brazing, extrusion, rolling or other forms of thermomechanical processing for metallic alloy systems.
- Demonstrated ability to select and conduct tests in the area of metallic corrosion.
- Knowledge of physical and/or mechanical metallurgy, with the ability to select and develop technical approaches to complex challenges.
- An established professional reputation for technical expertise and technical leadership within the field .
