POSITION: Charge Nurse- Emergency

STATUS: Non-Exempt

POSITION SUMMARY

Addresses the psychosocial, physical and general aspects of patient care related to the Emergency Department. Provides direct and indirect patient care to neonate through geriatric patient age-groups. The Emergency Department charge nurse provides guidance to nursing and ancillary staff makes bed assignments and manages staffing. The charge nurse serves as a liaison between the doctors and other staff in the hospital.The charge nurse manages the department work flow and monitors patient care and facilitates patient transfer to other facilites.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Minimum of five year experience in and acute care facility preferred. Emergency Department Charge nurse experienced preferred

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION

Current Registered Nurse in the state of Texas (or compact equivalent)

Current BCLS required. ACLS and PALS required within first 90 day of employment. ENCP preferred.

Collects and accurately documents comprehensive data pertinent to the patient’s health and wellness. Identifies physical symptoms and changes and takes appropriate action in a timely manner. Evaluates patient outcomes and analyzes the assessment data to determine diagnoses or other issues.
1.05	Documents performance evaluation for the Emergency Dept staff with ED Nurse Manager input.
1.06	Educates patient and family on plan of care. Maintains privacy and confidentiality.
1.07* 1.08*	Identifies communication and cultural needs of the patient and utilizes resources to ensure appropriate delivery of patient care. Promotes a safe patient environment by identifying at risk patient i.e. implementing fall precautions.
1.09	Demonstrates effective delegation skills.
1.10	Consults with other departments as appropriate for an interdisciplinary approach and adjusts nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care.
1.11*	Corrects and/or reports all unsafe environmental conditions and failures and demonstrates responsibility to the overall safety of the work area.
1.12	Participates in unit activities, attends scheduled meetings/in-services.
1.13	Demonstrates knowledge and use of current computer skills with in department.
1.14	Complete all mandatory education programs.
1.15*	Responds to codes and emergencies.
1.16*	Functions as a back-up for Emergency Department personnel when needed.
1.17	Functions as House Supervisor in case of his/her absence.
1.18*	Makes bed assignments as appropriate to the patients needs.
1.19	Performs daily assigned duties. (i.e. bed ready, crash cart, etc.)
1.20	Acts as a resource for staff needs in regard to daily unit operations.
1.21	Notifies House Supervisor of any hospital issues in a timely manner.
